Here is a partial list of volunteer opportunities.
Single activity Volunteers-
Description: Volunteers come and participate in art or recreation activities with clients. Some of these are on-site activities, others “out of house” activities in the community. There are always staff present for these activities as well. Examples include weight-lifting, arts and crafts, playing cards/board games, running, bowling, hiking, rock-climbing, etc. May also include clerical volunteers or those with special hobbies, such as gardening or landscaping.
Schedule: routine or periodic, as little as 1-2 times per month to regular schedule multiple times per week. May include evenings and weekends.
Requirements: Ability to pass a Washington State Patrol background check, brief volunteer application, Client Confidentiality Statement, Misuse Statement, Copy of current TB test and Photo ID.
Independent Living Skills Instructors-
Description: Volunteers teach a class about important skills for young adults including household budgeting, applying or interviewing for jobs, applying for college, auto repair, household repair, etc.
Schedule: quarterly classes available at our outpatient location. Late afternoon except in summer when they are held mid-afternoon.
Requirements: Ability to pass a Washington State Patrol background check, brief volunteer application, Client Confidentiality Statement, Misuse Statement, Copy of current TB test and Photo ID. knowledge of relevant course content
Tutors/School Volunteers-
Description: Volunteers work with the teacher clients as part of their school program to provide 1 on 1 tutoring in academic subjects (Math tutors always in demand).
Schedule: routine, as little as 1-2 hours per week. Monday-Friday 10am-Noon or 130-330pm
Requirements: Ability to pass a Washington State Patrol background check, brief volunteer application, Client Confidentiality Statement, Misuse Statement, Copy of current TB test and Photo ID. knowledge of basic math, grammar and spelling, advanced academic knowledge helpful, but not necessary.
Transport Volunteers-
Description: Volunteers transport clients to appointments (typically medical) in Spokane.
Schedule: Varies.
Requirements: Ability to pass a Washington State Patrol background check, brief volunteer application, Client Confidentiality Statement, Misuse Statement, Copy of current TB test and Photo ID, training re: transport procedures, Clean driving record.
Nursing Volunteers-
Description: Generally associated with a clinical internship placement related to a school program. Nursing volunteers complete general physicals, basic sick-checks that screen for need for more intensive services or referral, TB tests, educational presentations and engage in shadowing activities with the staff.
Schedule: Varies.
Requirements: Enrollment in a Nursing Degree program. Ability to pass a Washington State Patrol background check, brief volunteer application, Client Confidentiality Statement, Misuse Statement, Copy of current TB test and Photo ID.
Clinical Volunteers/Practicum Students-
Description: Generally associated with a clinical internship placement related to a school program. Shadow counselors and eventually develop responsibilities for clinical activities, including possible small caseload of clients.
Schedule: Varies.
Requirements: Ability to pass a Washington State Patrol background check, brief volunteer application, Client Confidentiality Statement, Misuse Statement, Copy of current TB test and Photo ID. Application or current CDPT or CDP.
